Whoops, its been a while since my last blog!

Whoops, its been a while since my last blog, I had actually completely forgotten about it and stumbled upon it tonight whilst writing a book review on another post, wow where has the year gone. Its not been one of the best I would have to admit, but I'm still alive so cannot complain too much.
Onward and upward to the year 2012, hoping for 'better thing' to come of this one, knowing my luck the predicted 'end of the world' will probably happen just as I start to get my new life on track, oh well gotta suck it and see and enjoy the ride.

Well its the eve of Christmas eve, (the night before if that makes sense) and my whole house, literally the whole house is dusty, we are mid having an extension put on and at the sanding stage and oh boy it is messy. I now have complete and utter sympathy for one of my best friends who has been doing up her home for a little while now, "How do you cope?" I have wiped the surfaces more times that I would like to admit and its STILL dusty!!!! My dear hubby has worked day and night, (4am bed time for him this morning) to try and deliver me this Christmas present before the big day, he only started a week ago so is going pretty strong but I feel for him as he is exhausted and doing it all for me !
*feeling thoroughly spoilt yet a little bad as the expected completion time is 24 hours away*
Currently he is having a break, well I say a break, he is out Christmas food shopping with my mother! Not sure how that's is going but I'm sure they will be getting on like a house of fire, especially as she rang to say could he drive as she has had a 'few' to drink, O to be a fly on the wall, he he!

Any whoo, I'm actually meant to be wrapping the remaining prezzies but instead I'm sat on me bum talking to you, so I think its time to wish you all a merry Christmas what ever you may be doing and  a very happppy New Year!!!

Louis Braille

Our topic of conversation today came around rather strangely, someone had left some marbles in the hallway and we have wooden flooring, as I walked through to the kitchen with my heels on I stood on the marble and 'rolled' down the corridor and fell through the cupboard door, I felt as if I had broken my wrist and ankle at the same time, but got up and shook myself off.
The kids were very concerned about me and someone said 'Didn't you see it?'.
I hadn't seen it and this is where our topic for the day came from (sorry no photos of me or the broken door!)

How you would feel if you were blind?

We studied using another lapbook and some print outs all about Louis Braille to gain a bit of background knowledge about the history of where Braille originated and visited our local library with the hope of showing the kiddies what a braille book look and feels like, we were a little disappointed to find they only had hearing books. We looked high and low to find a tiny piece of braille somewhere and eventually found a very small bit on the side of a bin in the ladies toilet of a local restaurant, as you can imagine I didn't encourage the children to 'have a feel'!!!
The children wrote to the Royal National Institute for the Blind who ever so kindly send them the Braille alphabet and some other fab pieces of information. I made me realise not just how difficult it must be for someone who is blind or partially sighted but just how scary the world must be.

We tried out a couple of experiments to try and see how we would feel.
Here are a few photos of the children making jam toast and a strawberry milkshake, blindfolded.
Alex went first....
He got his bearings pretty quick but had to try hard to remember where all the item lived, he especially had to be careful of the toaster as obviously it was hot whilst it was cooking.
The milkshake making was actually quite impressive, except there were no spoons in the drawer so he had to 'go find' more in the dishwasher.

Sophie breezed through this activity, I wondering if she was having a little peek, but she says she just knew where everything was kept and was very confident in her actions.

Well done on this one Sophie but scroll down as she didn't do so well on the next activity, lol!!!

Shannon worked hard and took a lot longer to familiarise herself with her surroundings which kind of made me laugh as she bakes in the kitchen almost everyday so I assumed she would know where everything is. Something I found extremely interesting was that Shan didn't cope to well with the other kiddies chatting around her, she wanted it to be quiet so she could concentrate on what she was doing.

Casey was fascinated as to what we were doing and being three, she really didn't understand when we tried to explain what being blind is, she also had a go!
Didn't she do well! Well true to form my little darling did a fab job of buttering her bread blindfolded, (I had only left the room for a minute) and this is what I returned to find!

Our next little activity was hurdles, how it felt to walk through the house firstly in a straight path, secondly after being spun around then asked to get to the front door, the kids chose to use a stick which nearly caused Alex to loose an ear and very nearly a new TV for Rich! Well Casey does get a little excited at times.

And I must add that although Sophie was fab at the breakfast making task and pretty good making her way to the front door but I have honestly never laughed so much when we spun her around, she was so disorientated she nearly walked into the door.

We had a bit of fun learning about this topic, we had fun trying out a few activities but we all agreed how much we take for granted and how lucky we are that we have our sight and what a harder world it would be without it.

Chinese New Year!!!

CHINESE NEW YEAR!

How awful is it that I'm getting on a bit but I actually knew very little about the Chinese New Year, I had no idea where the animals came from or how they were linked to people and their personality traits. When I first met my husband I always remember him referring himself to a snake,to be quite honest I thought it was a joke that I just didn't get (story of my life!!!)
One of the greatest things about home ed is that we can choose as a family exactly what we want to learnt and we can do it in the way we want, this topic was supported by a lapbook.
I love lapbooks so much, they offer a guiding light to me and support my learning which in turn helps the children, I'm an absolute believer in if a child or adult enjoys what they are learning they will remember it so much better than if they are just told.
For this reason I like to incorporate lots of art and creativeness into our learning and here are a few things we did to whilst we studied The Chinese New Year!!!!

Sophie made a dragon head/mask.

Shannon helped created a fabulous dragon head.
Both Casey and Alex made the Emerald Prince.
They created Chinese New Year animal style biscuits.

They will love me for posting this picture but as you can see they are each wearing the mask that represents their Chinese New Year animal! This year is Shannon's year, the Year of the RABBIT!!!

Now I know why Rich is a snake, I understand the reasonings behind the conversations we had when we were first courting and I myself feel happier knowing this and we finished the evening off with a massive chinese from our very own Derry @ Jade Palce, by far the best Chinese in the Bay and it was extremly yummy !!!

Alex's 9th birthday

Not only was it Valentine's Day but it was also my only little man's 9th birthday. We have always had big parties for the kiddies, normally themed with lots of their friends but since we have been home schooling, we have only seen a handfull of Alex's school friends, although we have a huge new circle of HE friends who are fantastic and a great support, we decided to see this birthday in quietly.

We surprised him with a day trip booked to @Bristol, a science museum in Bristol, we woke early and Alex opened his prezzies which consisted of lots and lots of lego, Moshi monster and Club penguin membership and lots of clothes as Alex is really into his fashion

.

Here are a few photos from our day at the Science musuem.
We spent hours looking, learning and playing, there was so much to see and do and we especially loved the planetarium where we got to sit back and relax and look at the sky at night right above us, truly magical!

What a fab day we had! It was finished off with a tea party at Nanna's house with lots more prezzies and a cake made by me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEX!!!!

CAKES - I love cakes

Firstly I have to admit that I am the decorator only, my dear hubby is the cake maker, he makes the softest, yummiest sponges ever and usually on the spur of the moment when I say, 'Rich, please can you bake for me' usually late at night.
Here are a few of my cakes but I will add more later.

Sophies Alice cake
Shannon's cake

Caseys 3rd Toy Story
Tortoise for my special friend Jen!

SOPHIE'S 'ALICE IN WONDERLAND' BIRTHDAY!

For Sophie's 13th birthday she didn't want a fuss, no big birthday like I'd thought she would like, we've always celebrated birthdays the best we can but this year all she wanted was a trip to Alton Tower's with a few of her best friends during Scarefest, but as that wasn't until October she decided on a sleepover and a movie on the day of her birthday, after all she was about to become a teenager!

The latest release at the movies with 'Alice in Wonderland' and our local cinema was screening it at midnight so Sophie invited her friend

(handmade by me)
All of her friends came dressed up in character and looked absolutly fantastic.

THE CAKE - I made Sophie's cake but unfortunaly the characters became 'obese' over night! They started off lovely and slim but I guess gravity took hold and we had lots of little fatties, cute still though!

We decorated the cabin with scence setters and they had a Mad hatters style Tea party and made Alice in Wonderland inspired jewellry.

Quick bite to eat at the diner before the cinema.

DONT THEY ALL LOOK FAB, THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES IN FANCY DRESS AND THE CINEMA WAS PACKED!

Photos from scarefest at Alton Tower's to follow on another blog.
